For 5 full days, we go through how to set an indigo vat with the 1-2-3 method, and prepare and dye different natural materials such as silk, wool and cotton. Linda teaches dyeing with natural indigo & tannins as well as shibori techniques & reserve printing. There will be plenty to learn for both experienced and beginners.
There will be time for your own creations as well as a substantial collection of samples to take home. On Friday evening we end with a vernissage for ourselves and curious neighbors who are starting to get used to people with blue hands once a year. Therefore, do not book a trip home on the last day of the course, no one can drive!
Linda Zetterman probably knows most about indigo dyeing in northern Europe. Her shorter and longer courses in Sweden are quickly fully booked and therefore it is extra fun that we have attracted her to the beautiful medieval village in Languedoc where textile production and dyeing have been important since the Greeks traded here. Linda teaches at Capella on Öland and holds workshops in indigo and natural dyeing with different techniques. Read more at www.lindazetterman.se .
About the village of Bize-Minervois in Languedoc
The course is held outdoors in the dry and hot September climate. The house we work in has plenty of space in the unlikely event that it rains. In the garden and the nearby hills, walnut, fig, and other coloring plants grow for limited experiments. This is the time of the grape harvest, there is fresh fruit and lots of vegetables in the local markets.
The village is small and has several restaurants, a bakery, a small grocery store and a cooling bathing river in the middle of the village. Markets are held everywhere and you can get to the Mediterranean by car in less than 40 minutes. But once we have landed here, we usually stay.
About the practicalities
For itineraries, ask Birgitta who will help you find the best way to get here.
The course fee is 819 euros if you come all the way by train or similar transportation and 910 euros including VAT if flying. It also includes transfers from and to the train and bus station in Narbonne, 5 days of courses with a teacher and an assistant, morning and afternoon coffee, excursion to a nearby inspiring place, help to book suitable accommodation and other things in French if you need it.
You can either have lunch at one of the restaurants or cook yourself in our large kitchen in the main building. The lunch break is a little longer than at home, a siesta is usually welcome during the hottest part of the day.
When registering, you pay a registration fee, the rest you pay a little over a month before the start of the course. If you cancel after the first of June, we must keep the registration fee and if you cancel after August 1, the course fee will not be refunded. We have costs for classes and accommodation that cannot be recovered in case of late cancellations. We accept a maximum of 12 participants so don’t wait to sign up! (but wait to book travel and accommodation until we know that the course will take place).
For accommodation, we recommend airbnb or bookings.com. Choose an accommodation in the village of Bize-Minervois as public transport is very limited. We have some bikes to lend.
